Week 12 Homeschool 2020

Today was a snow day for the rest of the county, but homeschoolers don't have to worry about icy roads so we were business as usual around here (after playing in the snow for a long time this morning...)

Science we continued our geology unit with sedimentary rocks. We did some demos about sediment and how sand and rocks pack together over time.
My fav part of the lesson was finding an artists that found sands from different parts of the world and took photos under microscope. So beautiful!

We related to how when pioneers were building the salt lake temple they had to stop after 5 years working on the foundation because the sandstone was not holding up the granite walls. So they had to redo the foundation with granite. I shared how I had a similar experience with my testimony when I got older and couldn't just rely on believing what everyone else says is true. I had to build a solid granite foundation by studying the word of God on my own.

We read more Esperanza Rising. I am surprised at how much Benson gleans from our read alouds. He doesn't seem like he is listening but he is. The girls made more yarn dolls while they listened.

Benson did N today. N is for numbers so we played with numbers today. Also we did a find the word "go" exercise because we learned to read that word with the Marvin K Mooney book we read last week for M. He did great.

TUESDAY, Oct 27

Ben got out the geo trax train set today and the girls were playing with him so happily we didn't even start school til noon. We had the girls go through some of the books I got about South American countries and teach us something they found interesting. We read a fairy tale from Chile, "Grim Grunt and Grizzle Tail" that the kids loved. And they learned about Brazilian Favelas from the book, "From My Window".

Last night we had a treat, Sister Debby Jensen from the ward did a zoom call with us and taught us all about Venezuela her home country. It is so cool to learn about places from people who love them. Especially interesting to me was her sharing what it was like to be "illegal aliens" as her parents stayed in US after visa expired because it was not safe to return to Venezuela and they didn't have enough money to get immigration attorney for citizenship. Debby has zero accent as she was raised mostly here in Florida but wasn't able to get citizenship until a couple years ago.

The girls received a writing prompt inspired from Esperanza Rising. There is a Mexican proverb that states "The rich man who becomes poor is richer than the poor man who becomes rich." The girls had some thoughtful essays on what it means to be "rich" and what money can (and can't) actually buy.

Benson learned N is for Name and we practiced spelling his name. Then we made a necklace with his name (that turned into a bracelet). We read the Napping House and The Nose Book.

WEDNESDAY
THURSDAY
Corrine Christian special guest Instructor on Peru. She spent two hours with us teaching us all about her favorite places she has visited and the non-profit Peruvian Hearts that she helps support. She brought fuzzy wuzzy baby alpaca clothing for us to feel, and other Incan souvenirs. It was really informative!

FRIDAY
Created Ally's chef linguini halloween costume. Girls did prodigy math game.
