MONDAY
We did our safety unit lesson on kitchen safety- watching out for cuts, burns, bacteria, and falls. We had to put our efforts into practice so the kids helped make some rice crispy treats and mac n cheese for lunch. No cuts, burns or falls. :)
We did online mad libs to practice 8 parts of speech and learned what preposition and conjunction and interjection are with thanks to some schoolhouse rock silly songs on youtube.
We had everyone share the writing they did last week for changing a story by altering the perspective. They were so clever! These girls are natural writers and it was the most fun to hear them read their stories themselves with animation and feeling. Ally's effectively made me feel bad for the witch in Rapunzel, Eliza's story of the trials of giraffe on Noah's ark (who saw land first because he was so tall) was a delight, and Sam's Jack and the beanstalk by the Giant was so cute. She used big words like "astonished" and I was so proud.
Benson began the letter H. H is for hotdog and we read Pigeon wants a hot dog.
TUESDAY
We "arrived" in Central Africa. We learned about the Democratic Republic of the Congo. What an interesting place! It is basically the earth's treasure box. But has been continuously pillaged by other nations and their own warring country for decades. There is no infrastructure, the kids go without education and families without food, yet they are the richest nation I'm resources of prob all the earth. So sad. We learned how to do their fun and energetic dance the "kwassa kwassa" or in french the quoi ca, or what's that? We loved the kwassa music with it's fun rhythm.
We started a writing assignment with a short story prompt about a kid who finds a package on front door and realizes something is wrong. It will be fun to see where each story goes. Sam already has four pages written - I am so surprised and delighted by her enthusiasm for writing.
Benson continued H with a h word sort. He's great with the sound. But keeps forgetting h's name.
We learned a 8 skip counting song.
The best part of this week is the guests we have at our house, grandma and grandpa Lee! They have patiently listened to all bensons nonsense, read stories and played countless games of Rummy.
WEDNESDAY
Sam learned about metric system in math this week we finally found a ruler (!) In our mess with metric on it so she did a big assignment on measuring and converting to meters.
We did safety unit on Cyber safety and peer pressure. It was good to talk about what to do when encountering pornography or other tough situations.
Ben did h is for house and we made houses out of popsicle sticks. And he found all the h's in the letter crackers bucket. We picked out hearts and he said h each time we punched and we glued them all over an H paper.
Eliza is doing great in her multiplication math this week. BA is really challenging and she rises to the problem solving problems really well.
Ally and I read more Long Walk to Water. And did some analyzing of author's use of pacing and personification. Fun to dissect good words. Eliza has been listening in (from afar because it bugs Ally). Eliza loves a good read aloud. :)
I'm reading Mrs Piggle Wiggle to Sam at night which is fun and she is plugging away at Harry Potter each day. She is on #2. The big illustrated books are so cool.
So proud of these kids and all they are learning.
FRIDAY
Guest Speaker for our last class in our safety unit... Gun safety with dad.
Also Galimoto art projects and "crossing the river" riddles for math games.
Plus a sad conga line for dance (we hoped it was from congo but it's cuban) but we did show grandma Lee or sweet "kwassa kwassa" skills from last week's dance lesson.
