WORLD STUDIES:
We kicked off Africa day with the Rains in Africa by Toto, lolol. It was great.
We discussed the five regions of Africa, and colored West Africa region that they studied last weekend with Rachelle and then colored in the North Africa region that we will study this week. I encouraged them to learn about Egypt on their own time as it is so popular I wanted to learn about other places. Morocco and Sudan are what we are focusing on from the region.
We used the localpassportfamily.com Morocco Virtual Tour
Ally and I began reading aloud The Long Walk to Water/
Sam and Eliza watched the author read aloud the book The Storyteller, a book about Morocco
Benson learned about angles in math. Letter f. We did freeze dance and made flags and marched about to John Phillip Sousa. We covered an f with feathers.
Matt and Katie had their first day of in person school at high school. Katie and I watched the church schools live broadcast. Learned about church school options for college. She is super not interested right now. I showed her cost comparison and she showed more interest, lol.Sam Eliza and I finished Bob book read aloud. They ended up really liking it.
Snow day at recess!
Bingley had 2nd day of puppy training and I went with Phil to meet with trainers.
WEDNESDAY, SEPT 9
Pres. Nelson bday so we talked about his life for a bit.
Littles did the 3rd safety lesson on earthquakes and natural disasters. We talked what to do in situations and made a model of Earth's crust and mantle with Graham crackers and yogurt. Tastey science. :)
Benson and I read the Foot book, and One fish Two fish. We made a footprint fish and counted fingerprint fishes into matching number "aquariums". We reviewed angles and sang "hinges".
Taught Ally adding and subtracting negative numbers using hot air balloon analogy and fractions finding common denominator. Played Casey Running number line game.
Eliza finished her area and perimeter unit. She's got it.
Sam did polygons and quadrilaterals and we played X3 game.
Introduced Ally to dictation (she hated it) with beginning quote from long walk to water.
Eliza and Sam did dictation of Bob quote "All the things I choose to put in my head are what make me. I plan to choose wisely." And we discussed making good media (and food) choices.
Discussed school scholarships vs. private scholarships with Matt and how to apply for them. Byu.scholarahipuniverse.com has scholarship matching app.
THURSDAY
Zzzzzz, I don't know if it was the weather or what but we were so super sluggish and sleepy today. All of us! But we got everyone through a solid math lesson. Did some lessons on the lithosphere of North Africa focusing on the Sahara desert and the unique animal adaptations therein and also the Atlas mountains (until our video ended and asked us for money).
These are our grumpy faces
We talked about writing from multiple perspectives and discussed fav books that did that: including Wonder, Bob, Percy Jackson, and others.
We are trying to write a fairy tale\familiar story from another perspective. Sam chose Jack and Beanstalk, Ally Rapunzel, Eliza a giraffe on Noahs boat.
We finally went through piles of clothes in girls rooms to clean up. That was a major effort. Five trash bags of hand me downs from two girls!
FRIDAY
We read the Bed Book Poem by Sylvia Plath and the girls drew pics of what their most outrageous dream bed would be like.
We read from A Long Walk to Water
We got together with our neighbor friends the Williards. The kids played happily on the rocks out back an imaginary game and out in the playhouse.
