At Eliza's request we took our Global studies to Greece. She has been reading the Percy Jackson books and loves Greek Mythology, so next stop on our world tour... Greece.
Began reading D'Aulaire's Greek Myths. We took a mulitiple choice test on what we read. Both girls got everything right and they were proud. Good reading comprehension.
We learned about Greek Roots and how to use a dictionary and thesaurus, also what an antonym and synonym are.
Ally emerges from her independent school cave every now and then to try to make new treats. Wednesday was Lunch Lady Brownies and Thursday was Churros. She's a really good baker.
For Math this week I was able to get out some of our manipulatives. Benson's counting is getting a lot more accurate. He has mastered one to one counting and counting in sequence.
Eliza is learning about comparing fractions. Sam is learning number sense through puzzles.
We got to learn about the Greek slave and story teller Aesop and read a bunch of his tales. We practiced using our new IEW unit skills of Story Sequencing and creative writing. They planned a story retelling of their own of The Boy Who Cried Wolf. Eliza did the "Mouse Who Cried Cat", Sam "The Fly Who Called Swatter", and Benson came up with a super cute one that he illustrated on the white board about "The Bee that Cried Bear" (the bees were guarding the honey.) :)
Then they tried again with a fable of their choice. Sam did The Fox and the Stork remake, "The Bat and the Rooster." Eliza did the Tortoise and the Hare, "The Sloth and the Jaguar" see below for Eliza's story.
They are natural writers and I LOVE reading what they write. It is my favorite thing.
We learned about Greek architecture and did a STEM activity using paper cups to explore how columns are used to hold up heavy structures.
Benson made a letter necklace. He still forgets the name of some of the letters, but he knows all their sounds and has begun telling me what words start with and sounding letters together to try to make words.
