Homeschool 2021, April 27-30 (Week 32)

Each of us is assigned a book to read this month, all relating to Asia. I read Other Words for Home, about a Syrian girl who moves to America Eliza is reading Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes, Japanese girl after the bomb in Hiroshima Sam is reading The Year of the Dog, A Chinese-American girl finding her self Ally is reading Iqbal, brave Pakistani boy who fought for children's labor rights We started out this Asian adventure with a stop to the Evergreen Library. We love books. Also we are back at trying to get our "steps" in each day now that the weather is better. We walked to Richmond Hill and back. We began our middle eastern studies with youtube videos about the geography of the region, the political history of the region (which is complicated!) and a video summarizing Islam and the Muslim faith. Homeschool Philosophy- Unit Study

A unit study, also called thematic units or integrated studies, incorporates many subjects into an in depth study of one main topic or theme. Rather than studying six or seven unrelated subjects, a unit study will bring many subjects together to enable the student to gain a deeper understanding. For example, while studying an era in history, one could study the types of art, music, and literature from that time period. Or, perhaps a younger child might spend a month studying butterflies by reading and writing about butterflies, doing art projects, creating a butterfly garden for scientific observation and spelling words related to their findings. We made our game plan for attacking Asia, well not attacking, but gently approaching. haha. Sam is going to do a report on Turkey and Eliza on N. Korea. As those were two countries they were interested in but we would not have time to spend a lot of time on.

13 Years of Homeschool Check In

Posted this on Facebook... "Not sure why I'm sharing, lol, but in case it is interesting to anyone else... I used to think you had to choose to do either public school or home school and I stressed over choosing between the two. Well, my kids have been to public and homeschool at various times- one semester here, one there, one kid here, one kid there- pretty much all over the place for last 13 years. 🤪 As my oldest graduates this year, I was curious how much school each kid has ended up doing at home. So I added it up... Semesters homeschooled- Matt 13/26 Katie 9/22 Ally 9/18 Eliza 7/14 Sam 4/10 Benson 2/2 It added up to be a lot more than I realized! If you are good at math, that's over half of them doing at least half at home. It is difficult to compare the “homework” experience to the “homeschool” experience. You are getting your kids at the end of their day when they are exhausted and so are you. We had a special guest instructor that we kidnapped from Utah. Grandma Lee taught the kids about The Netherlands. They did a tulip art project and wrote about what she taught them. Eliza almost learns more if I leave her alone and let her create. She engineered this awesome wishing well from popsicle sticks. Eliza put together a Google slide presentation on Greece. Homeschool 2021 February 1-5

MONDAY, Feb 1 Eliza practicing her sign language alphabet. Sam finished her entire math book. I was proud. She is showing her face of how she feels about math. Not her favorite! Benson's math book today. Also demonstrating the letter X in sign language. He wrote x's and cut them out. And made letter x with magnet balls and sticks. He also practiced counting and writing the numerals to 10. We read some more in the Mouse and the Motorcycle and did a lesson from BraveWriter about using quotation marks in a sentence. Eliza already knew that, but it was good lesson for Sam. They all came to Costco and Trader Joe's. We made a list ahead of time and I told them if it wasn't on our list before we left they couldn't ask for it at the store. That helped them channel their gimmies. Week 12 Homeschool 2020

Today was a snow day for the rest of the county, but homeschoolers don't have to worry about icy roads so we were business as usual around here (after playing in the snow for a long time this morning...) Science we continued our geology unit with sedimentary rocks. We did some demos about sediment and how sand and rocks pack together over time. My fav part of the lesson was finding an artists that found sands from different parts of the world and took photos under microscope. So beautiful! We related to how when pioneers were building the salt lake temple they had to stop after 5 years working on the foundation because the sandstone was not holding up the granite walls. So they had to redo the foundation with granite. I shared how I had a similar experience with my testimony when I got older and couldn't just rely on believing what everyone else says is true. I had to build a solid granite foundation by studying the word of God on my own. ...

Gung Hay Fat Choy

Happy Chinese New Year! This is what we did for "CHINA" week: We celebrated Chinese New Year with enthusiasm (if not accuracy). We started by sweeping out the house (bad luck and evil spirits). I liked that part. The house was a disaster from Sunday so it was sort of essential because we couldn't find the school room. Feeling fresh from Sunday we began with our gospel connection, we did an addition page (26 problems like this 35+59=) from the January Friend magazine to decode a scripture about sharing the gospel. I taught him how to add the amounts using an abacus. He got the hang of it after a few problems but gave up the abacus entirely by the end because he preferred doing the sums in his head. He can carry in his head. Is that normal? We discussed the basics of Budhism and the things we had in common. We learned what zen means and the benefits of meditation. He related it to the guys on Star Wars having to think good thoughts so they wouldn't turn to the dark side...
