Summer Break!

We had our first official day of summer break. Matty was really excited to be 'done' with school. I had to laugh because learning at home is just a way of life now for us. This is how our first day of summer break went:

At breakfast Matty asked why oceans are salty. So we looked it up online and learned all about how the minerals are carried from the rivers and streams to the ocean and then don't evaporate with the water and so the salt builds up. Also learned about the word "absorb".

Later on driving in the car Matty asked about light and why we can only see it if its reflecting off something shiny. This Q opened a can of worms and we took a little while this morning to study the Electromagnetic Spectrum. We talked about all the different kinds of waves and what they are used for (Radio, Micro, UV, Visible Light, X-rays, Gamma, etc.) Matty and Katie had fun drawing the different kinds of waves - the big ones-radio and the little ones-gamma. Katie called them 'bumps'. :)

Katie wanted to glue so we glued letter cut-outs on construction paper. She knows all of them and their sounds now. Matty made a fort out of his letters.

We went to the pool and took toys that sunk. The kids did awesome swimming to the bottom to get the rings. They have come so far since March when they wouldn't put their eyes in the water.

We listened to two books on tape in the car while he followed along with the words. One of which was Pirates of the Caribbean- Matty loved it! So Phil introduced him to the movie that night. Now all his Lego creations have a pirate theme.

While Matty was waiting for me to get the girls ready for bed, he got impatient and read three Berenstain Bear books to himself - this is BIG because he never reads without an audience. Yea!

Phew... its so good to be "out" of school! :)
